The vision of The Center for Learning & Resilience is to surround young children with a community of skilled and compassionate people. Programs at this Chico location bring focus as a place for young children, families and professional caregivers to learn and heal. The Center’s programmatic concept was developed by 25 community leaders from different organizations who recognized the extreme lack of crucial developmental and behavioral health services for young children in Butte County. The culminating project provides comprehensive services, such as case management, child assessments, therapeutic services and family strengthening activities.

The abandoned and shuttered North County Courthouse in Chico was chosen as the home for The Center for Learning & Resilience. The building itself had suffered a period of neglect and flooding and needed a complete overhaul to be habitable. Studio W1 facilitated a series of workshops to hone and distill the project, prioritizing pragmaticism and cost consciousness, while balancing a focus to be inspiring and enlightening for the children who occupy the space.

1 This project was completed by the Architecture Department of NorthStar, which was acquired by Studio W Architects on April 1, 2024.
