In our San Jose Studio, we had the pleasure of hosting students from Los Gatos High School for a hands-on job shadow experience! Studio W team members—Jim Moore, Herman Fernandez, Zahra Rouhani and Yvonne Pingue—guided the students through an architect’s day-to-day schedule, providing a closer look at how projects move from concept to construction.
Throughout the visit, the students learned about different types of architecture degrees, the path to becoming a licensed architect and what a career in the profession can look like. Our team also walked them through real aspects of the job, including preparing plans, responding to contractor questions during construction, creating 3D models in design programs and reviewing example proposal materials used in the RFQ/P response process.
The students were especially curious about the design process and showed strong interest in 3D modeling, building restoration, landscape architecture and interior design. They asked thoughtful questions about whether the knowledge used in practice is taught in architecture school and how architects continue learning throughout their careers.
Jim, Herman and Zahra demonstrated tools commonly used in the industry, including Revit and SketchUp. Using projects such as the Paradise Elementary School Reconstruction and the San Juan High School Science Wing as examples, the students were able to see how these programs are used to develop and visualize designs, and they even had the opportunity to explore the programs themselves.
The most rewarding part of our team’s day was hearing about these students’ interests and aspirations for the future. Their curiosity, enthusiasm and thoughtful questions made the experience meaningful for everyone involved. Sharing knowledge, connecting with students and helping spark excitement about the field is something we truly value.
Studio W is always excited to share our work and inspire the next generation to explore the possibilities of architecture and design.
