Studio W Architects joined WoodWorks, TimberQuest and XL Construction in hosting an educational tour of Elkhorn Village Elementary School within Washington Unified School District. The event provided an in-depth look at the school’s mass timber buildings as the campus modernization project approaches completion later this year.
Attendees had the opportunity to walk the site, ask questions and engage in discussions while learning about the evolution of the design process, engineering details and construction techniques used throughout the project. The tour offered valuable insight into the growing role of mass timber in educational environments and the collaborative efforts required to successfully deliver projects of this scale.
Beyond construction innovation, the experience also emphasized how thoughtful use of wood supports biophilic design principles and contributes positively to student well-being. Natural materials, warmth and visual connection to nature are increasingly recognized as important elements in creating engaging and supportive learning environments, and Elkhorn Village Elementary School stands as a strong example of this approach.
