Think Wood’s latest article, “Making the Grade with Mass Timber Schools,” features Elkhorn Village Elementary School as an example of how prefabricated wood construction is helping shape the future of school design. The article highlights TimberQuest’s kit-of-parts approach, which combines the efficiency of prefabrication with the flexibility to create customized learning environments. As California schools face the need to expand their campuses and provide permanent, high-quality facilities, this approach offers a way to accelerate construction while maintaining design flexibility and budget considerations.
Wood also brings unique qualities to the learning environment. Exposed wood finishes and natural light create warm, welcoming spaces that connect students with nature and support their overall well-being.
Elkhorn Village Elementary School features seven buildings totaling 27,500 square feet, accommodating K-8 classrooms, special education, staff spaces and a library. Working within TimberQuest’s prefabricated system, Studio W incorporated a variety of exterior materials, colors, casework and flooring to give the campus its own architectural identity. The library also features Studio W’s signature garage-style glass roll-up doors, creating a stronger connection between indoor and outdoor learning.
Through TimberQuest’s prefabrication process, XL Construction assembled the seven buildings in just 19 days. The streamlined construction approach brought the modernized campus to completion for students to return in time for the start of the 2026/2027 school year, demonstrating how prefabricated wood construction can deliver thoughtfully designed educational spaces on an accelerated schedule.
Think Wood is a communications campaign dedicated to showcasing the benefits and applications of wood in construction, including its ability to bring a greater connection to nature into the built environment.
