South Tahoe Middle School serves the entire South Lake Tahoe community, offering a full range of academic courses and athletics guided by next generation learning. To meet the evolving needs of its students, families and community, Lake Tahoe Unified School District is moving forward with a multi-phase modernization of the campus.
Phase 1 will focus on improving site circulation, safety and outdoor facilities. Planned upgrades include reconfiguring the existing traffic roundabout, introducing a dedicated two-lane drop-off zone and creating a large, centralized bike parking area. A dedicated bike lane and new traffic control gates will also be added to further enhance safety for students arriving and departing campus.
The existing 10-lane track and athletics field will be resurfaced, with removal and repair of damaged sections and upgraded turf for the field. These improvements will ensure the facility remains a valuable shared resource for both the middle and high school programs.
The campus will also receive exterior envelope upgrades to maintain safe and functional learning environments. Extensive areas of dry rot siding and fascia will be replaced with new materials, and the entire campus will be repainted to establish a cohesive color scheme. In addition, single-pane windows will be replaced with energy-efficient dual-pane windows, many with security film applications for additional first-floor safety requirements.
Future phases will address interior renovations to the gymnasium and other campus spaces, reinforcing the District’s commitment to creating safe, modern and inclusive environments that support learning, physical wellness and community engagement.
